Penang to score a first this Chap Goh Meh

GEORGETOWN (Penang), Feb 24, 2010: Penang will score a first this Chinese New Year when the tiger roars with a grand Chap Goh Meh celebration never before seen in the country, let alone on the island.

The celebration, themed For the love of Penang, come home, will be held at the Esplanade and Padang Kota Lama at the Penang Heritage City over two days – on February 27 and Feb 28 – from 5pm until 11pm.

Jointly presented by Penang State Tourism Development & Culture and Go International Group Sdn Bhd with co-organiser MYFM 101.8, the MYPENANG Chinese New Year Reunion Celebration will include the 88 Food & Fashion Merchants Bazaar, outdoor showcase concerts, a variety show, lucky draw giveaways, inflatable games for children and even a full moon dance party!

In addition to the annual Chap Goh Meh celebration of Tim Kam – where mandarin oranges are thrown into the sea, Penang scores a first this year with a two-day showcase of Taiwan’s hottest rock stars, local celebrities, magicians, the hottest DJs and even a “Bak-hu” (meat floss) selling lady on stage to give you their best performances. The festive celebration begins from 5pm on both days and is open to the public.

The event is set to be a mix of youthful urban entertainment and traditional Chap Goh Meh fun, complete with fireworks, throwing of mandarin oranges and more!

“MY Penang CNY REUNION is a festive carnival for everyone. GO International Group, MYFM radio station and Penang State Tourism Development & Culture have come together to jointly organise this event so we invite everyone to join us regardless of their age, race or nationality. It is about coming to Penang and enjoying both traditional and contemporary culture at one of the oldest heritage sites on the island,” announced YB Danny Law, the Penang State Tourism Development & Culture Executive Councillor.

On 27 February, fans will be delighted with performances by Taiwanese rock star duo Y2J (Shen Mu Yu Tong), Genie Xuo Wen Hsuan and Cindy Yen Yong Ling together with local celebrities like MYFM DJs Royce and ASQ Winner Ah Yoke who recently starred in the popular local box office hit Tiger Woohoo. Also, coming home are well-known Penang celebrities – Malaysian Idol Danelle Lee and Astro Talent Quest winner Alvin to give their popular numbers. Other acts including Katoon Network, the Astro Battleground dance competition champions and also the highly popular teen idols Thomas & Jack.

Later the evening on 27 February from 11pm, the full moon after-party featuring Kuala Lumpur’s hottest dance trio – DJs Blink, X.U. and Goldfish will set out to entertain party-goers at G Hotel. Entrance passes to this party can be purchased at the door and costs RM28 inclusive of one drink.

On 28 February, centre stage then plays host to a wide selection of Malaysian cultural dances, variety show performance, games and activities by REDFM’s Love Classifieds DJ Nisha and friends, traditional lion dancers on stilts and fireworks!

Bloggers are invited to attend, snap, shoot and upload their pictures and sign up for the MASS BLOGGER REVIEW COMPETITION at the Go International games booth. A camera prize awaits these bloggers.

There will be a variety show on both nights featuring Penang’s famous Lorong Selamat Pork Floss Trader Aunty KO AI, everybody’s favourite Nyonya, Poh Choo as well as 6 Magicians from KL called DEJA VU. Plus surprise performances by philanthropist Datin Maylene and more! Be sure to catch REDFM’s DJ Nisha and grab free love shaped balloons given out free!

“Besides Taiwan’s rock star duo, we have also included local street acts such as the whimsical Ko-Ai, the meat-floss selling lady who wins her customers’ hearts with her comical rhymes, magicians from KL, Malaysian cultural dances and of course a fireworks show to end the event on the second night.” explained Patricia Pee, the Project Director from GO International Group. “The whole objective of MY PENANG CNY REUNION is to unite people from all walks of life to come out and celebrate Chap Goh Meh together with their friends and families from all ages and everyone will still find some interesting aspect to their likings,” she further added.
