Selangor Muzikal Ekstravaganza 2010 kicks off today with grand opening ceremony
Petaling Jaya, 26 June 2010 – Selangor celebrates a month-long musical gala with the opening ceremony of the second Selangor Muzikal Ekstravaganza (SME 2010). The event, held at Dataran Petaling Jaya, was officiated by The Honourable (Y.B.) Madam Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping, who is Selangor Tourism, Consumer and Environment Committee Chairman.
The ceremony was celebrated with much splendour featuring performances by the Selangor State Arts Group and singer-songwriter Zalila Lee entertaining the audiences present at the ceremony befitting the gala’s tagline of ‘Entertainment for All.’
Part of the ‘Selangor Shines’ tourism campaign, where it aims to achieve 5.6 million visitors to the state, SME 2010 will now become a Selangor state signature event, to be held annually at selected locations within the state.
“The purpose of this extravaganza is to give the state’s musical talent an avenue where they can showcase their talents to the public,” says Y.B. Elizabeth Wong who marked the opening of SME 2010 with a thunderous hit on the gendang.
Among the events slotted for SME 2010 is musical theatre Taming of the Shrew, talent contests Shining Stars and C&U Band Explosion, MBPJ Symphony Orchestra Concert, the International Islamic Song Festival, Go-11 Indie Concert & Bazaar and many more.
The Selangor Shines Choir Competition is another talent contest that is part of the line-up. Open to primary and secondary schools in the state, it is held to encourage creativity with students. The melodious and captivating voice of young students is sure to enthral audiences at MBSA Auditorium this coming 17 July, 2010. The public is invited to support their favourite school, if not their alma mater on the day.
The most anticipated location for SME 2010 will be Dataran Petaling Jaya where the Musical Carnival will be held from 26 June to 11 July, 2010. The Carnival, open on weekdays from 6pm – 6am and 3pm – 6am on weekdays, will not only cater to the FIFA World Cup 2010 fever by screening live matches on two outdoor screens but it also features themed musical concerts every night which promises to be a delight for all especially those residing in Petaling Jaya. Among the themes for the nightly concerts, held from 8pm – 11pm, are Reggae, Buskers (street performances), Percussion, Rock, Broadway, Blues and Jazz and many more.
The Musical Carnival will also hold a signature co-event which will please aspiring musicians and music lovers – the Music Workshop/Seminar. To be held daily from 4pm – 6pm, it covers melodious clinics for guitar, drums, Malay percussions, vocals, digital audio recordings, and lyrics writing as well as seminars with topics such as ‘Music and Profession’ and ‘Marketing and Management of Musical Works’. There is even a musical instrument-making workshop held by Guitar Workshop. This signature co-event will be held by various prominent Malaysians in the music industry such as Man Kidal, Manan Ngah and Aris Ariwatan.
There are also bazaars at the Musical Carnival, selling various goods including food and beverage, handicrafts, souvenirs and musical instruments, which was visited by Y.B. Elizabeth Wong after the opening ceremony.
Dataran Petaling Jaya is one of SME 2010’s venues which include PJ Live Arts Centre, Malawati Stadium, MBPJ Civic Hall and many more, hosting the myriad musical events that are sure to attract and specially catered for the masses.
Although some of SME 2010 events are free to the public, others required the purchase of a ticket, a donation in lieu of a ticket or a free pass. The public are encouraged to check SME 2010’s website at www.semua.my for more information on their favourite events.
