Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Mercy Malaysia and Go International Group to raise RM30,000 for the Yasmin Ahmad Children Fund
KUALA LUMPUR, 26 September 2012 –Brand owner and organiser Go International Group yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MERCY Malaysia their fifth annual homegrown Independent Youth Festival: FEYST12 at Central Market, Kuala Lumpur.
Mercy Malaysia was represented by Honorary Secretary Yang Mulia Puan Raja Riza Shazmin Raja Badrul Shah and Go International Group by MD and FEYST Festival Director, Jasmine Low. The signing was witnessed by Ministry of Information, Communications & Culture Malaysia (Music Division) – Assistant Under Secretary Yang Berusaha Puan. Haniah Hassan and Creative Group Head of Leo Burnett Mr Jovian Lee. The MOU marks an important milestone for the youth festival as it empowers youngsters to ‘do something for the youth community’ while having fun doing what they love.
In her opening speech, Jasmine Low said, “When we launched the Independent Youth Festival in 2008, our intention was to provide a platform as well as develop the creative industry amongst Malaysian youth. FEYST12 this year features creativity together in one place. We believe that creativity sparks ideas and ideas spur creative innovation amongst the youth”.
Starting from 28 September until 15 December 2012 in Central Market, as well as various other locations, jam-packed FEYST12 will benefit MERCY Malaysia’s Yasmin Children’s Fund. The agreement also sees the two parties involved working with Leo Burnett-publishers of the late Yasmin Ahmad’s book titled “How You Know’ where every copy sold at RM35 will go towards the fund.

FEYST12 will showcase free music concerts, workshops, a music forum, film screening and video game tournaments. Furthermore every Thursday for the duration of the festival, DoPPel Kafe in Central Market Annexe will also showcase Yasmin Ahmad’s movies and videos. The festival organisers said that they aimed to raise RM30, 000 through the screenings and book sales, with all proceeds going to Mercy Malaysia.
During the launch Ms Low said that the festival would showcase over 50 artists including newcomer 16-year old Amrita Soon, Az Samad, Narmi, Djezna’s Stalker, Suzie Zaharuddin, Hameeruddin Zawawi and Clinton Liew Band. She went on to mention that FEYST 12 would also host gaming tournaments where the champion would be sent to represent Malaysia at the upcoming FIFA13 world championships at Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) 2012 in Paris, France.

FEYST12 has lined up a 3-month event listing that will surely keep the action packed momentum solid, combining the best of music and digital culture. This year, the popular outdoor FEYST free concert will take place over two days – on 28 September in Central Market and on 6 October in conjunction with Kreatif Malaysia @ Panggung Anniversari. Over 40 independent acts have been lined up to hit the various stages during FEYST12 such as teenage newcomer Amrita Soon, soulful Dzamira Dzafri, singer songwriter Brian Gomez, guitar educationist Az Samad, post-rock Penang band Damn Dirty Apes, melodic rock band Djezna’s Stalker and many more.
A key highlight is the Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) Malaysia Qualifier (PS3 FIFA13) pro-gamer qualifier where the winner will head to Paris Games Week (France) to better Malaysia’s 8th placing in last year’s global match. This takes place over two weekends on 29 & 30 September and 6 October 2012. The Yasmin Ahmad Children Fund
The Yasmin Ahmad Children Fund was set up in honour of the late award winning creative and film director, and in memory of her humanitarian spirit. From the day it was launched, proceeds collected have been channeled to MERCY Malaysia’s projects and programmes such as the Outreach Clinic at Rumah Nur Salam in Kuala Lumpur, purchase of medical equipment for the Paediatric Institute at Hosp. Kuala Lumpur (HKL), the education programme at MERCY Little Caliph Centre in Afghanistan
and setup of an Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) Corner at Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) Cambodia.
True to her helpful nature that goes beyond race, religion or colour , children in need, both locally and abroad have benefited from the proceeds. In 2010, more than 300 children at Rumah Nur Salam received primary healthcare and dental check-up; children
aged five years and above attended pre-school at the MERCY Little Caliph Centre and received food, drinks and stationeries; while the setting up of an ORT Corner in AHC benefited 1,852 children in prevention of deaths from diarrheal dehydration. In
addition, donation from a corporate organization that carries brand Silky Girl, allowed the purchase of two oximeters for the Paediatric Institue of HKL.
A total of RM 61, 220 has been collected to date and as a non-profit organization, MERCY Malaysia appeals to generous members of the public to continue donating to this special fund for children as we carry on the charitable spirit of the late Yasmin
