The premier In-between Arts Festival creates platform for emerging artistes in music, art and fashion

30 October 2012, Penang – The first In-between Arts Festival (IbAF) breathes life from 26 – 28 November 2012 and will showcase three days of music, fashion and arts by emerging artistes literally in between the George Town Literary Festival (23-25 November) and the Penang Island Jazz Festival (29 November – 2 December 2012).

Festival-goers will be taken on a journey from Gurney Paragon to Bangkok Lane and even the living rooms of some Penangites!

The inaugural festival provides an essential platform to showcase upcoming talents as well as supporting established acts, which infuse innovation in their artistic interpretation.

Supported by Penang Global Tourism and arts communities throughout the country, IbAF aims to bring artists from all over the country to experience Penang. This first year will attract dozens of performers staging their works all over Penang to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes workshops, poetry, dance, music, fashion installations and photography exhibitions. Headliner act, BIHZHU is a soulful singer and songwriter who released her first album titled ‘Nightingale Tales’ recently. The Penang-girl-at-heart clearly shares her love for George Town! The music video ‘The Heart Way’ offers viewers a glimpse into Penang’s Living Museum. The In-between Arts Festival is also a moving festival, where artists will ‘spring into action’ at various locations like Beach Street, Little India, popular backpacker spot Chulia Street, the Esplanade, Gurney Drive, Pulau Tikus market, the well-preserved street of Bangkok Lane right through to Botanical Gardens and Batu Ferringhi. Artists plan to spring surprise visits right into the living rooms of Penangites in the spirit of bringing the arts to the people!

Festival Director Jasmine Low shared, “The festival was conceived as an in-betweener; to create a link between a festival of words and jazz music. Together with the support from Penang Global Tourism and Hunza Group as well as the youth communities, we are happy to be able to produce a festival that acts as meeting ground for dancers, musicians and artists. Penang is the ideal location for artistic collaborations and there is certainly a feeling of a renaissance of the arts here”.

The festival takes place over three days from 26-28 November 2012 at Gurney Paragon on Gurney Drive (Monday 5.00-7.30pm, Tuesday 10.00am-7.30pm, Wednesday 3.00-11.00pm) and Bangkok Lane (Monday 9.00-11.00pm and Tuesday 8.00-11.00pm). The In-between Arts Festival Grand Finale Concert is not to be missed with singing performances by Bihzhu, Jerome Kugan, Dzamira Dzafri and special guest star, Rozz Ritzmann! Official Venue – Gurney Paragon

Gurney Paragon is an integrated development of residential condominiums, a shopping mall and an office block. This iconic development is located along Gurney Drive, a highly patronised tourist spot duly recognised by both the Federal and State Governments and is the In-between Arts Festival hub. Being on a promenade, the site commands a panoramic sea view of the Straits Channel. Gurney Paragon offers a combination of modern contemporary development with a touch of heritage element – a concept similar to international landmarks such Xin Tian Di in Shanghai and Chijmes in Singapore.

St. Jo’s @ Gurney Paragon is Hunza’s pride and priority. St. Jo’s, a colonial building that is the architectural heart of Gurney Paragon, is a dynamic urban centre where art, heritage and culture co-exist at a hot, happening place-to-be. Hunza is proud to preserve St. Jo’s as a contribution to Penang’s living history and George Town’s listing as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. This development is the only one in Malaysia that integrates a beautifully restored heritage building with modern residential, retail and commercial components. In 2004, Hunza purchased the site from the Federation of Malaya Christian Brothers’ School. The Novitiate was restored and transformed into St. Jo’s, the new dining and entertainment heart of Penang. To date, Hunza has invested RM10 million for the restoration work. St. Jo’s faces Gurney Drive, and will be linked to the Gurney Paragon Mall. The construction of the shopping mall is expected to complete in early 2013.

Phase 1B of the project was completed since end of last year and the current tenants surrounding St. Jo’s and opened for business are Brussels Beer Café, Goku Roku Ramen, Italiannies, Meet Fresh, Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt, Morganfield’s, Pacific Coffee Company, T.G.I Friday’s, Thai Odyssey (Traditional Thai Massage), The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Wong Kok Char Chan Teng. Opening soon are JK Plastic Surgery Consultation Centre, Lunarich Pizza & Pasta and Angus House Japanese Charcoal Steak.

This prime location is an ideal festival hub as it’s conveniently located in between George Town and Batu Ferringhi.
